CHURCH TO OFFER SERIES ON BAPTIST HISTORY

Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn is offering a series of six classes on Baptist history during
July and August. This is part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of that
church in Auburn.
Pastor Dave Clark will have primary responsibility for summarizing Christian history before
Baptists began, for tracing Baptist beginnings in England and America in the seventeenth and
eighteenth centuries, and analyzing expansions and divisions in the nineteenth century. Other
segments will focus upon Maine Baptists and the challenges faced by Baptists today.
Elaine Ardia will sponsor a session on the history and doctrines of the Free Will Baptists. Court
Street Baptist Church is the result of the merger of two churches in Auburn, one of which was a
Freewill Baptist Church. Ardia developed her knowledge as a staff member at the Muskie
Archives at Bates College. Freewill Baptists founded the College.
Chris St. Louis, the chair of the Christian Education Board, noted, “During this anniversary year,
we wanted to provide an opportunity for our members to refresh their memories and expand our
knowledge of our heritage. Just what makes a Baptist a Baptist?  We also welcome members of
the community to get acquainted with us.”
Classes will be held on Sunday mornings July 11 to August 29, except August 15, when the
anniversary celebration will be held. Each session will be an informal discussion beginning at 11:
15 AM and concluding at noon. For more information, call 784-6661.
Pastor David Clark holds degrees from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts and from
Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, and the Doctor of Ministry degree from
Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. He held pastorates in Illinois, in Ontario, and in Nobleboro
and Ogunquit, Maine, before coming to Auburn in 2006.
Elaine Ardia is a graduate of Eastern College in St. Davids, Pennsylvania and is Archives
Supervisor at the Muskie Archives, Bates College. She chairs the Sesquicentennial Anniversary
Committee of Court Street Baptist Church.
